Why I started Mosaic

Why I started Mosaic

I've been a designer and art director for the last 20 years. I cut my teeth designing major newsstand magazines you see at the checkout aisle; I did the agency thing, helping create brand identities and driving the creative for active, outdoor, and lifestyle brands; and most recently, I've focused on e-commerce design as both a solopreneur and as part of a duo running a small web shop called Saturday Republic. Throughout every iteration of my career, the one common thread has been the consistent need for high-quality imagery, and the subsequent challenge of finding it.

Cool free stock photos do exist, but to find them you have to invest serious time into searching for them. I've spent countless hours sifting through sites like Unsplash and Pexels, painstakingly finding one image at a time and creating something out of nothing. I know that so many other creatives out there are faced with this same time-consuming task daily, and how frustrating it can be when you need to be designing, but instead you're sinking hours into scrolling through hundreds of thousands of photos unable to find what you need.

Over time I slowly started realizing that this hunting and gathering was actually the part of my job I looked forward to the most. I love being immersed in gorgeous imagery; the dopamine hit that comes with finding something beautiful amidst all of the scrolling; the places your imagination takes you in creating cohesive visual stories out of what had been singular images. So I decided to run with that energy and Mosaic was born.

I'm excited and proud to be the first photo research resource out there helping brands and designers cut through the clutter to find amazing free photos fast. I'm also stoked to be helping bring to light some of the amazing artists that make the free stock communities tick. It's my goal to become a go-to in every creative's tool-box, helping them to work smarter, not harder, so they can skip the scrolling and get back to doing the things they do best. I'm glad you're here, I'm excited for the future, and I hope you'll join me for the ride!
